I think sometimes ego and self respect are mistaken .The perfect example for ego should be if there is a cup of tea lying around and husband refuses to pick up as he thinks its wife job thats ego .And if wife does not pick up the glass as she thinks work should be done equally thats self respect.
I really liked your example.
Last month I was having a debate with a friend of mine on the same topic... well I wont get into too much detail of that debate as our conclusion sums up almost everything..
At least I think so... and thats what matters to me.. now you can name it ego but I will call it self-respect...thats just me...
Anyway I think I'm kinda deviating from the topic so coming back to where I was...
Well we concluded that : Ego is how great you think you are.
Self respect is how great you know you are.
But I seriously belive that defination of self respect will turn into ego soon because, it says "how great you know you are"
but have anybody known greatness of him/herself completely ? sometimes its over judged or under judged so there I'm confused with ego's defination.

well, I think ego is what you think you are. Self respect is your image you create of yourself through your deeds. It is true picture of yourself and not inflated image you create in case of ego. On the other hand, if you under estimate yourself, you develop low self esteem resulting in inferiority complex.

You develop an inflated picture of yourself. Self respect is true picture of yourself you earn through your deeds. In case of self respect, others perception about you is the same as yourself whereas in case of ego, your perception about yourself is much higher than others.
ummm... well Mr. Khaitan Can't really distinguish b/w the two... There is a very thin line b/w the above said words...
Ego is self importance and your craving to be the centre of everyones attention.
Self respect is when you recognise your own worth and want to live your life accordingly.
